Designed by the British design duo Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, the Vitra Mikado is a chair with a serene yet commanding aura that aims to impress not only with its form but also through its comfort.

Constructed from a 100% recycled polypropylene backrest shell and seat cushion with polyurethane padding, the chair is supported by recycled die-cast aluminium, with legs available in four finishes: polished or powder-coated die-cast aluminium, natural oak, or dark oak. A cleverly designed mechanism hidden beneath the seat enables a gentle reclining motion of the backrest, providing a unique seating experience. With sustainability in mind, the covers are neither glued nor stapled and can be removed for cleaning or replacement, ensuring long-term versatility and longevity.

The Mikado Armchair features an ergonomically shaped seat and backrest, ensuring optimal support for extended periods of sitting. Whether utilised as a dining chair, office chair, or accent piece, it offers a versatile seating solution for users of all ages. With a wide selection of fabric covers and diverse colours, it effortlessly complements any interior style, from home dining tables to restaurants and meeting rooms.

Materials/Construction

Backrest and seat - Flexible backrest, back shell in recycled post-consumer polypropylene, seat and backrest upholstery in polyurethane foam.

Inner seat panel - Die-cast aluminium.

Base - non-stackable wooden base in natural oak or dark oak or aluminium base with powder-coated or polished finish; replacement by trained professionals only.

Cover -
Not glued, in fabric or leather with two seams along the sides of the backrest; replacement by trained professionals only.

None of the components are glued and they can all be separated according to material for recycling.

The Mikado Collection is currently available in the following fabrics. Fabric upholstery is grouped by numbers F30-F120, and leather upholstery is grouped by numbers L20-L50; the higher the number, the greater the cost. Please get in touch for a bespoke quote if you would like a fabric listed here that isn't available to buy online.

F30 - Plano

F60 - Volo

F80 - Dumet, Iroko 2, Savana

F100 - Nubia

F120 - Cento, Credo

L20 - Leather (The standard grade leather used by Vitra is a robust cowhide leather, dyed-through, pigmented and embossed with an even grain pattern.)

L50 - Leather Premium F (Leather Premium F is a relatively smooth cowhide leather with a flat grain and fine top sheen.)

    Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby

    Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby

    Edward Barber, born in Shrewsbury in 1969, and Jay Osgerby, born in Oxford in 1969, studied architecture and interior design as fellow students at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1996, they founded their own studio for design and architecture under the name Barber & Osgerby. Since that time, their collaborative work has probed the interface between industrial design, furniture design and architecture.

    Barber and Osgerby’s approach is characterised by its emphasis on experimentation and innovation and an exploratory attitude to materiality and colour. Amongst many professional accolades, Barber and Osgerby received the Jerwood prize in 2004 and in 2007 were awarded the status of Royal Designers for Industry. In 2013 they were appointed to...
