In the throes of World War II, the U.S. Navy needed a place to sit. They commissioned a chair that was lightweight, non-corrosive, fire resistant and torpedo-proof. Emeco took on the challenge and in 1944 the 1006 Navy Chair was born. Handcrafted from 80% salvaged aluminium using a unique 77-step process, it was tested to last 150 years. Today Emeco still make the Navy Chair the same way at their factory in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

The Hand Polished Navy Chair is handcrafted from recycled aluminium and welded into one sculpture-like piece. Emeco uses soft 'T0' aluminium tubing to form the bends, which produces a smooth radius inside and outside. Once the smooth radius bends are made, Emeco Navy Chair goes through a proprietary heat treatment process transforming the 0 Temper tube to T6 (as strong as a bicycle frame). High-quality craftsmanship is instantly apparent; the chair doesn't have any fixings and all welds are ground smooth and flush for a uniform appearance.

Featuring a curved backrest, back legs and a unique concave curved seat, the chair ensures its user comfort while seated. The footrest underneath the seat adds both strength and stability, keeping the legs in place. The shape of the footrest varies by model - the 1006 Navy Chair has two parallel bars. The backrest of the 1006 Navy Chair has three vertical bars. At the top of the three bars on the back, you will find 3 weld beads - this is the Emeco craftsman's signature, unique to each chair.

Unlike any other furniture made of steel or iron, the Navy Chair cannot rust, it's non-magnetic, anti-bacterial and ages gracefully. The Navy Chair is a robust and durable chair for both indoor and outdoor settings. The original Navy Chair is easily recognised by the official Emeco stamp at the back of the seat.

The Navy Chair also available in the original hand-brushed version.

    Emeco

    This product is designed by
    Emeco

Emeco started in 1944, founded on the principle "Begin with what’s left over. Turn it into what will last." Emeco took salvaged aluminium and made chairs for the US Navy. A simple war-time necessity, which became an ongoing direction. Today we also have growing mountains of scrap plastic. Emeco keeps it out of oceans and landfills and instead turns it into furniture that lasts - A new planet necessity.

Emeco makes products in the USA, just like they always have since 1944. At the Emeco factory in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Emeco craftsmen still turn scrap aluminium into chairs so strong Emeco guarantee them for life. That's how Emeco define sustainability.
