The Mater's Award-Winning Ocean Collection was originally made from plywood and steel in 1955 by renowned Danish designers Jorgen & Nanna Ditzel. Mater reissued the collection using sustainable alternatives - recycled ocean plastic, fishing nets and discarded beer kegs from one of the leading Danish breweries - Carlsberg. The reissued designs have been scaled up by 5% to accommodate modern proportions, but the form remains the same. The Green OC2 version is made from the plastic in Carlsberg's old beer kegs which have come to the end of their life. When the beer kegs are emptied after use, they get deflated, granulated and cast into the characteristic green-coloured slats of the Ocean Collection. One single chair uses 960g of plastic waste.
Characterised by its lightweight form with repeated slats and metal frames, the Ocean Chair is great for both indoor and outdoor use, or somewhere in-between. Its moulded seat and backrest curve and flex to human contours for maximum comfort while seated. Made with recycled materials, each chair is a unique and valuable piece of furniture. The Ocean Collection is designed for disassembly, meaning that the design allows each component to be recycled into new production circles when it comes to the end of its useful life. The Ocean Chair is suited to a wide variety of environments, from cafes and restaurants to gardens, terraces and balconies.
The chair can be stacked up to 6 chairs for extra practicality.
