The Linear Desk by Form & Refine is comprised of the Austere Trestles paired with the Linear Tabletop. The trestles are constructed from solid oak wood. The tabletop is made from a solid pine core with a thick oak veneer applied to all surfaces. All the desk finishes will protect the wood from marking in normal daily use.
It was designed by Kristian Vedel in 1968 whilst he led the Department of Industrial Design at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He found the classrooms were lacking functional furniture for the students. His trestles were the solution. Their folding capacity makes them easy to store when not in use. This is also a perfect solution for small living spaces; a room which is used as a home office could become a guest room in seconds.
This feeling was perfectly encapsulated in this quote by the designer.
“The starting point for an industrial artist's work must always be that he or she, from their own point of view and as objectively as possible, takes a position with regard to what they feel society and their fellow people need. They must personally take a stand on the existing possibilities and responsibilities.” Kristian Vedel
